I’ll be honest – I wasn’t really into podcasts. I still make fun of my parents for listening to talk radio, even though that’s basically what podcasts are, but for the modern age. But when I was driving almost 2 hours back and forth to Jonsboro a few years ago, I decided to give them a shot and I realized “Hey, it’s a good distraction AND you can learn something AND they’re free!”
If you just got into podcasts recently because of Serial and don’t know where to turn next, fear not! I got
you chu. Even if you aren’t into podcasts, I bet these ones will get you hooked! Here are 5 podcasts you should definitely check out. You can thank me later (or in the comments 😉 )
If you want a ‘No Bullshit’ podcast – Jenna & Julien Podcast
If you’ve ever watched Jenna Marbles and enjoyed any of her videos, you’ll most likely enjoy this podcast. This podcast is hosted by Jenna and her boyfriend Julien Solomita. There’s no real structure to it and they don’t have sponsors – it’s just a passion project for the both of them. If you’re looking for a podcast that talks about a little bit of everything with no BS then this is for you. They pick different topics each week that are either something going on in the world (Apple Watch & Macbook Impressions), just something they want to talk about (Teeth & Why Shopping In Retail Sucks) or a challenge episode (Guessing Movie Quotes).
If you’re looking for professional, motivational advice – Being Boss
This podcast is great for anyone who uses their blog for income (or not!), freelancers, etc. Emily & Kathleen discuss each episode different things that entrepreneurs or anyone who is their own boss may come across, like How To Do Like A Boss, tips on Staying Motivated and Happy and Redefining Professional. I really like listening to this when I’m feeling particularly blah and need a pick me up. I love learning from such creative people and even if it’s a topic like getting paid which I can’t relate to (I work at a big company), I still feel like I’m getting something from it.
If you want to know more about video games – The Patch
Brought to you by the awesome people of Rooster Teeth, The Patch is a weekly audio & video podcast talking about everything in the world of video game news – upcoming & new releases, news around game developers, new technology (virtual reality anyone?) and other stuff. I’ve found a ton of new games I’ve been playing lately – like Ori and the Blind Forest – through The Patch. And because I’m lazy, I like that they do all the news aggregation for me. I just get to sit back and watch/listen. 🙂
If you want to learn something – Stuff You Should Know
I like being that person that knows a little bit about everything and the Stuff You Should Know podcast from HowStuffWorks.com is a great way to find out little tid-bits you’d never know before. The topics range from week to week, like How Tea Works or Why Do Lefties Exist? Each topic has tons of research and facts and data behind it, so if you’re ever in a conversation with someone, you can say “Did you know that Nostradamus was full of sh*t? Because he basically was.”
If you’re technical or want to become technical – Developer Tea
I identify as a techie, but I’m not a developer/programmer. I’m sort of a hybrid of a business person and a developer and I’ve always wanted to expand the developer side. Jonathon doesn’t go too deep into the crazy mechanics of code, but rather talks on a high level about certain tools and tricks to help developers and the interviews with different people around the tech world is really great. Bonus points? His podcasts are usually 10-15 minutes long, which is great for ADHD tech nerds like me. This podcast is great for bloggers too, who want to gain a bit of technical knowledge.
